DICKENS, CHARLES

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (The Pickwick Papers).

3.000,00 kr.

Chapman and Hall, 1837. 1st edition. 609 pp. With 43 illustrations by R. Seymour and Phiz as well as two additional illustrations by Buss. Half calf with gilt ornamented spine. Later rebinding (not contemporary). Binding in near fine condition with inconsiderable surface wear. Book block in very good condition with darkened edges, scattered foxing and a sweet tobacco scent from former pipe-smoking owner. With offsetting from possible old receipt or business card on the back of final page reading ‘Simpson’s’.

This example of Dickens' 'Pickwick Papers' is surely a rare find. Of all main first edition & first impression points described by WoodPaz Books Ltd., this book contains 6 out the 7 - including the missing 'E' on the bottom of pp.25, the uncorrected reading of 'S. Veller' on pp. 342 and the imperfect 'F' in 'OF' in the headline on pp. 432. It only lacks one first edition point - namely the figure '7' being printed slightly above the others on the page number on pp. 267. As mentioned the book also has two plates signed by 'Buss', which again is a sign of it being an early impression. The sign on the frontispiece reads 'Weller' correctly (instead of 'Veller'), but impressions with both were issued simultaneously.
