In very good condition with shelf wear, scattered foxing and discoloured page block. With ink writings on end page from former owner. From a pipe smokers collection, therefore with a sweet tobacco scent. Bookplate from ‘The Reading Society of Peterhead’ to front pastedown.

This particular copy is an early edition of the famous book. It meets some of the classic 1st edition trademarks such as the three line errata on pp.xiv and 'Frederick' misprinted as 'William' on pp.317. The book defers from the 1st edition with correct printing of the 'BB2' signature on pp.371 and the lack of date on the title page as well as correct use of 'Blandois' on pp.469-473. The book contains 40 plates by H. K. Browne (or 'Phiz'), two of them being a frontispiece and an engraved title page.
