This limited second printing from 2002 is designed by Kelly Everding. It features a short foreword by Auster, in which he introduces to us a very personal reason for him to have embarked on these early attempts at translations from his college days. What surrealist poetry offered to him in 1968 and to us today was poems about breaking free. In their day it was from the boundaries of consciousness and even language, whereas in 1968, when Auster was introduced to their works, their poems coincided with a generation of young people breaking free from the established society. Back in 1968, and now, the surrealists are as relevant as ever.
